Rauw Alejandro

In 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it became the most streamed single at the time within 6 months. This mixture of reggaeton, and pop music not only brought people back to this style, but also to Latin music as a whole. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs composed in Spanish predominantly, as well as 4 more songs in the year 2016. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 mostly Spanish songs made it onto the Top 100, and in 2020 there were 41 such songs. After Justin Bieber's remix in two languages to Despacito (2017) well-known artists soon began collaborating on reggaeton tracks, like Drake with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) and Madonna with Maluma on Medellin (2019). In the year 2020, some Reggaeton performers were complaining about the trend of the genre toward mainstream. However, a younger generation, Rauw Alejandro wanted to push forward the progression. It often blended elements from electronic dance music, as well as different types.
